ACI Toys Aragorn - Lord of the Rings 1/6 - first impressions

A lonely strider arrived in my 1/6 collection - my first Lord of the Rings collectible.

After seeing the Aragorn figure of ACI Toys personally in hand at my friends collection I knew instantly that I need it. The beauty of the headsculpt can't really be captured or described on photos, and probably for a lot of Lord of the Rings fans it will be either "like" or "hate". For me it's an easy like and I felt impressed by the likeness of Viggo Mortensen of ACIs sculpt.

There is one major drawbacks though: Right out of the box for most of the figures you won't receive an acceptable hairstyle. The wig ACI went for is too long and needs a bit of a haircut. If you're brave you can do this by yourself, but be careful and don't cut in straight cuts and take your time. Don't cut too much and use some reference photos of Viggo in that movies. After having the hair styled the right way I feel ACI toys did the right decision to use real hair, not sure if it would have looked that cool with sculpted hair if you get the curls right.

Here some photos of the figure just taken out of the box:

After the first haircut it looked liked this:

I  just was not happy enough, the length was ok, but the hair just did not curl the way I liked. So the key to use bit more water based hair products and get a more wet look going on. I took this photo of Viggo as reference:

The current and probably final style is now:

Unfortunately this will be the last release of ACI toys in their Lord of the Rings line. Which is really a pitty since this was quite a nice release. I might pick up the Ringwraith as well. Lets see what Asmus Toys can pull off with the license further down the road - looking at past Asmus LOTR products the human characters felt always a bit awkward sculpted.

Aragorn by ACI will cost you by the time I'm writing this already about USD 350 and he seems to be sold out everywhere in Hong Kong already. If you get him be sure to pick up the special version with Anduril. All blades you get with the figure are made out of diecast - pure awesomeness!

Sideshow Legendary scale Iron Man Mark VII - Avengers - video and photo review

Checking out some new territory in collection: I'm preorderd  this almost at its announcement - it's my second statue piece of Sideshow and this time in the legendary scale line: the avengers Iron Man Mark VII armor. First impressions after you get the 3 huge boxes is really amazing. Unfortunately the flaws lay in the details and I'll explain this to you in my video review. Generally speaking it's not worth the 2000 USD, or even a lot more if you have to import it to Europe or to Asia incl. Taxes. Also I saw some nice shots of the Art Imaginarium 1/2 pieces which look as detailed and have better painjobs, unfortunately they don't have the Mark VII in their line. So overall this LSF statue is a nice piece but it really like in the details and you have to be really lucky to get a "good one" since there are a lot of flawed items around which have cracks and really bad paintjobs. At least on mine I don't have cracks or completely "dull" paint areas. Also the red color is not as "candy apple" as on the prototype picturs which doesnt bother me too much but i understand everyone who hesits of buying this piece. I'll keep it for sure since shipping this massive statue around the globe is just too risky.

Lot more photos after the jump.

Hot Toys Tony Stark arc reactor creation set - Iron Man 2 - 1/6 MMS273 video and photo review

Actually I thought my collecting year 2014 was already closed, but you know Hot Toys, they can surprise you even at the last day in a year, so happened with this latest Iron Man 2 Tony Stark 1/6 figure which is basically a big fan service and only for hardcore collectors. It allows you to recreate the creation scene of the triangular arc reactor in the second movie and basically consists of some cool arc reactor items and an amazing headsculpt - the best do date. Enjoy some photos and the video review:

Some fresh blood for my 1/6 collection - Star-Lord arrived directly from Hong Kong. A damn good start into the Guardians of the Galaxy line, didn't expect that. The likeness to Chris Pratt is terrific! Enjoy some photos and a video review:
